The David Hewitt Memorial Scholarship was established by the Rising Sun High School Class of 1987 in memory of their classmate. David was born and raised in Rising Sun. After high school, David graduated from Vincennes University and the Indiana Police Academy with a degree in law enforcement. He served the southeastern Indiana area through employment with the police and sheriff departments in Switzerland County and Dearborn County. In 1998, he joined the Rising Sun Police Department and became Chief of Police in 2004. On February 13, 2019, Chief Hewitt passed away unexpectedly. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, community servant and friend. As Chief of Police, he was devoted to making Rising Sun a safe community. In his spare time, he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, shoot archery and sketch the outdoors.
